Releases from holds

Usefull hand techniques

Anytime you are facing an opponent, and he/she grabs you, leaving your hands free - use following techniques :

  1. Reach forward and poke opponent's eyes out with the tips of your fingers or your thumb.
  2. Reach forward and press your index and middle fingers into the hollow of his throat. This can be executed with a slow, pushing motion, or a fast, striking motion.
  3. Punch your assailant in the nose as hard as you can.

Usefull foot techniques

While releasing from chokes and holds, the following simple foot techniques are always usefull :

  1. Kick opponents knee as hard as you can.
  2. Scrape down opponent's shin with the edge of your shoe.
  3. Stomp on opponent's instep with your heel. Be sure to hit the instep, and not the toes

Wrist Lock Releases

  • If opponent's right hand is grabbing your right hand, or his/her left hand is grabbing your left hand: Turn your thum towards his thumb, and pull your hand towards your shoulder.
  • If opponent's right hand is grabbing your left hand, or his/her left hand is grabbing your right hand: Turn your wrist around from the outside of your body toward the inside and continue to push downward, away from his grip.

If one of your hands is free use hand techniques from above.

Bear Hug (from behind)

Strike opponent's face with the back of your head.

Alternatively :

  • Swing your hips to one side.
  • Strike opponents groin with the edge of your hand.

Bear Hug (from the front)

If your hands are free use any of the hand techniques outlined above.

Strike his face with the forehead area of your head.

Front Choke Hold

  1. Step back from opponent with your left foot.
  2. Straighten out your right hand and act as though you are throwing a softball between you and the as at 90 degree angle.
  3. Put your palms together and strike his nose as hard as you can with your elbow.

Alternatively bring the heels of your hands up under opponent's elbows as quickly as you can, lifting him up onto his toes. As soon as he changes position, use your knee and strike him in the groin.

Chiken Wing

  1. Turn your free hand over and straighten out your free arm. Be sure your palm is up, not down.
  2. Reach behind opponent's head and grab a big hunk of his/her hair (or ear or collar).
  3. Pull opponent around in front of you, using your free hand to twist him by the shoulder.
  4. Using your free hand, punch him in the nose as hard as you can.

Head Lock (from the side)

  1. Step with one foot in a direction which will square your feet perpendicular with the body.
  2. Using your outside hand (the right hand if the hold is on his right side, and vice versa), grab the leg that is opposite from the side of your hold.
  3. Pull his leg back while pushing forward into his body with your shoulders, forcing him to the ground.

Alternatively :

  1. Using the hand nearest to opponent's, reach up behind him/her and grab his hair, pulling him backward while you stand upright.
  2. Punch opponent in the nose with your free hand as hard as you can.
  3. Using the punch to the face and your hand in his hair, force opponent to the ground.

Head Lock (from behind)

  1. Place your right hand on opponent's elbow.
  2. Pull down on his arm as hard as you can.
  3. Turn your head towards your hand and his elbow.
  4. Take a long step to your right.
  5. Strike his groin with your left elbow.
  6. Stomp on his instep with your heel as hard as you can.

Alternatively after taking a long step, instead of striking groin with your elbow :

  1. Step around opponent's leg with your left leg untill your left leg is centered behind his/her legs.
  2. Straighten your left arm as you stand upright and twist your body to the left, forcing him/her to the ground.

Full Nelson

  1. Raise your arms straight above your head, and drop down to one knee as quickly as you can.
  2. Join your hands together and strike opponent in the groin with your elbow as hard as you can.
  3. Keeping your hands together, strike him in the face with your elbow as hard as you can.

Alternatively you may use second release from the Head Lock from behind.

Takedown combinations :

Combination 1:

  1. Block opponent's attack with Head Block. Turn your hand over, open the palm and grab attacker's wrist.
  2. Execute Reverse Punch to opponent's body, without releasing arm.
  3. Slide back hand under assailant's arm, grabbing his/her body.
  4. Step through with your back foot under opponet's arm, still held by the wrist. Push opponent over the leg.(Hip throw)
  5. Apply finishing technique of your choosing.

Combination 2:

  1. Hit attacker on the face.
  2. Grab hair with the other hand - pull down and back.
  3. Kick legs out from underneath with the leg on the same side as pulling hand.
  4. Release hair as assailant falls.
  5. Apply finishing technique of your choosing.

Combination 3:

  1. Block opponent's attack with Head Block.
  2. Strike opponent's face with the other hand.
  3. Grab hair with both hands.
  4. Strike opponent's face with the knee, without releasing hair.
  5. Pull him/her down to the ground by the hair.
  6. Apply finishing technique of your choosing.
